Smooth solid-color or metallic epoxy can be slippery when wet — but professional installers tune slip-resistance with flake media or aluminum-oxide additives. A properly specified epoxy floor is safer than bare polished concrete or tile.
Why Some Epoxy Floors Get Slippery
Smooth single-color epoxy and pure metallic finishes have no surface texture. When wet, they offer about the same traction as polished concrete or vinyl tile — which is to say, not much.
How We Tune Slip Resistance
Flake systems are naturally textured by the chip media — they earn an R10 wet slip rating without any additives.
For metallic and solid color systems, we broadcast aluminum oxide or fine silica into the topcoat. The texture is invisible to the eye but provides aggressive grip underfoot.
Slip-resistance is specified during the design phase based on how the room will be used — garage, showroom, kitchen, ramp.
Retrofit Slip Resistance
Existing slippery coatings can be made non-slip by scuff-sanding, applying a grip additive in a fresh topcoat. We retrofit slippery floors weekly in Huntsville restaurants, garages, and commercial spaces.
